SNOWTORIOUS B.I.G.

Snowpocalypse....Snowmageddon....The Blizzard of 2010....It goes by oh so many names. For the first time in 2010, but the second time this winter, we have had a major snow storm that found the citizens of this great state in an absolute frenzy. Thankfully, we were prepared this time.

I was at school on Thursday until 7 p.m. for parent-teacher conferences, and the only thing people could talk about (myself included) was whether or not we would have school the next day. The Winter Storm Warning was in effect from 10 a.m. Friday through 10 p.m. Saturday. One day earlier all of the school districts in the area closed down for a mere 4 inches of snow. We were all fairly certain that we would close down and not reopen for several days. By 4 p.m. Thursday the Governor had already issued a State of Emergency for Virginia, and our superintendent joined the throngs of school districts who cancelled school for Friday. I was incredibly grateful because I didn't want to drive to school Friday with that storm looming, but I had to laugh thinking about cities shutting down without a snowflake in sight.

The snow didn't actually start in Woodbridge until 6 p.m. Friday, but when it came, it came with a vengeance. By Friday night we already had calls from people at church making sure that we were okay, and asking Skyler to check in with the families that he is responsible for looking after. It gave us great comfort to know that if we needed ANYTHING we would be taken care of. Thankfully, our power remained intact throughout the entire storm, and now we have a beautiful winter scene surrounding us. School, though is already cancelled for Monday, the VRE train that Skyler rides suspended all trains on Monday, and even the metro won't run their above ground service. I guess we'll just have to enjoy another day at home! :-)

Friday at 4:00 p.m. The little bit of snow remaining from Wednesday's Snow Day.

Friday at 9:30 p.m. We were the only people on the block who went out to shovel. We're glad we did since we already had 6 inches. Our neighbors across the street saw us out there and decided to follow suit. We knew the rest of our neighbors were going to be sorry in the morning, and we were right!

My favorite nighttime picture. The snow looks awesome!

10:00 a.m. Saturday morning. By the time we finished shoveling for the last time there were 25 inches of snow. Yup, our bodies are going to feel that for the next few days!

Sunday morning. I love seeing how gorgeous the snow makes everything look.

During the last storm Skyler and I had our fun race around the yard. This time we decided to go into the back yard and make snow angels. While Skyler was cleaning off our satellite dish I jumped up in the air and let myself fall right into the snow. I was so spent from just trudging through the snow to get to the backyard, that I laid there for a few moments. I suddenly realized that any neighbor who looked out their window at that moment would probably think I was dead, so I promptly started to make a beautiful snow angel. It was rather difficult because I sunk several inches into the snow. When I finally tried to get up I was completely stuck, and of course I didn't want ruin my masterpiece. Skyler found me, started to pull me up, and soon as I was on my feet he fell backwards into the snow. He, too, created a snow angel. My plan all along was to open up the door in the kitchen so I could look down at the snow angels and take a picture. As we were making our way into the house the wind picked up and we could barely see where we were going. When I tried taking my picture I couldn't see anything. I was so disappointed. This morning, however, I looked outside and saw this fabulous sight! Skyler's snow angel was there in perfect form. His masterpiece was unscathed by the weather.

This was mine. Sad day. Apparently, Skyler is much more angelic than me. :-)
